There is something fanciful about mobiles. They snag our imaginations and spirits. I'm a huge fan of Alexander Calder. Of his whimsical mobiles it was said, "His mobiles occupy one's mind without constraining it and guide one's thoughts along blissful pathways." -Patrick Waldberg. That's my aim.
My mobiles are constructed using papers imported from Japan, Thailand and Nepal or paper that I have handmade from Abaca fiber. I use artists' acrylic gloss medium and varnish so that the blossoms or leaves are durable, washable and archival. Each leaf or blossom is handcut and assembled, taking at 5 - 10 minutes per leaf and 1 - 2 hours per blossom. I often use Swarovski crystal in my mobiles so that they send dashes of light as they move. Each mobile moves gracefully with the slightest breeze - when the furnace comes on, or you walk by.

I live in the mountains of Colorado, where Spring teases us with snow-covered daffodils. The happy yellow, coated in grays and muted gray-greens, is reminiscent of awaiting Spring to finally make a break for it. This mobile moves gracefully in the slightest breeze, such as when the heat comes on or the windows are open.

Each blossom is hand-made starting with paper pulp. Abaca fibre is a type of paper pulp made from the leaves of the Abaca tree, which is a relative of the banana tree. It is an extremely high shrinkage fibre. The dried sculptural shapes are extremely strong and will not tear or warp. I "pull" the paper in the manner used for more than a 1,000 years, using a mould and deckle. The blossoms are two "sheets" of wet paper with string or thin wire imbedded between them. The organic flower shape is due to the shrinkage as each piece dries, no longer flat, but rising at the intersection of the strings or wires. I can guide the shrinkage, but cannot control it, so each flower is unique, just as in nature. Each blossom is then hand painted and the African beads are wired to the inside. The structure is steel wire that I hammer to give it dimension and strength.

The mobile is quite light and can hang with fishing line, from a cup hook in the ceiling.
I live in the mountains of Colorado, where high altitude wild flowers finally bloom in the depths of summer. While hiking, I photographed the luscious colors of the flowers and repeated them here. I wondered whether anyone would want this mobile because it wouldn’t match their couch. But, “No Fear of Wildflowers” will be a statement piece that contrasts beautifully with modern-day gray walls. This mobile moves gracefully in the slightest breeze, such as when the heat comes on or the windows are open.

To create the deep and rich colors, I started with black pigmented abaca fibre to create the blossoms. Once dry, I painted the inside of the blossoms with “interference” paint which causes the blossoms to glow from the inside. This lustre is impossible to see in a photograph, but it is quite stunning in person. This mobile moves gracefully in the slightest breeze, such as when the heat comes on or the windows are open.

This minimalist mobile, is modeled after a mobile by Alexander Calder. (See the fourth photo). He had given a different mobile to Georgia O’Keeffe, which she had hung in her sparse, adobe home in Abiquiu, New Mexico. (See last photo.) It was her home, that I envisioned as I created this mobile. I wanted this one to have a Southwest flair, hence the turquoise stones.
